CULTURE & HISTORY: FROM ANCIENT LEGENDS TO HIDDEN BUNKERS
I'll be honest: Šolta has a centuries-old history dating back to the Illyrians, but you won't find spectacular Roman colonnades here. This is an island of labor, hardship, and survival. Its most precious treasures are often hidden in the rugged landscape - in the thousands of meters of dry-stone walls (suhozid), old lime kilns, or olive oil presses you might stumble upon in the most unexpected places.
You'll find echoes of the legend of the Illyrian Queen Teuta and the remains of Emperor Diocletian’s fish ponds in Nečujam bay, though today these are mostly treats for the imagination or underwater archaeologists.
The island's true soul, however, beats in the interior. It was there, seeking refuge from pirates, that residents built their stone houses, creating the unique Dalmatian architecture of Grohote or Donje Selo.

In Grohote, it's worth visiting St. Stephen's Church with its early Christian basilica foundations and the grave of Vesna Parun – one of the most significant poets in Croatian culture. Traces of the struggle against pirates survive in the form of the Marchi brothers' castle in Maslinica and the defensive tower in the center of Grohote.
More recent history is equally impressive: a massive underground military bunker carved into solid rock, featuring a labyrinth of corridors and chambers.
And don't forget the historic wells and cisterns – for centuries, these were vital for the islanders' survival, as they treated every drop of rainwater like a treasure.
