Nečujam is situated in the largest bay on the island, just 9 miles from Split. Historically known as Vallis Surda (The Deaf Bay), it has evolved from a former poets' retreat into the most vibrant family resort on the island.
Two Faces of the Bay: Why You Shouldn't Explore on Foot
A crucial tip for explorers: you cannot walk around the perimeter of Nečujam bay along the shore. This natural boundary splits the area into two completely different sides:

The Eastern Shore (The Tourist Side): This is the heart of the resort. It has a typical tourist character with a touch of a 1990s vibe. Here you will find the main beach, an inflatable water park, a beach bar, and all the infrastructure needed for families with children. This is also where the island bus stops.

The Deep Bay and Western Shore: Across the water and deeper into the inlet, the atmosphere changes drastically. This is a world of silence, with only a few holiday homes scattered along the coast. In the smaller coves like Podkamenica, Šumpjivina, or Mala Maslinica, you won't find shops or bars. Instead, you'll find peace and symbolic traces of history, such as the now nearly invisible remains of Emperor Diocletian's ancient fish ponds.

Logistics: How to Discover Hidden Corners?
Due to the lack of a coastal path and the hilly terrain, moving between these two shores without a car is nearly impossible.
Insider Tip: The best way to explore is by renting a kayak at the main beach. Only from the water can you truly feel the diversity of Nečujam. It allows you to paddle away from the noisy center to the quiet parts of the bay in search of your perfect spot.

If your goal is to have fun with the kids, stick to the eastern shore. It offers:

While Nečujam is undoubtedly the largest bay, it’s only fair to say that the tourist center feels a bit stuck in time. Unlike the intimate coves of Rogać, eastern Nečujam is the most populated place on Šolta. The high number of anchored yachts also means that the water in the center can sometimes be less clear than in the wilder, more remote corners of the island.
Important Update: The Shipwreck
Many older guidebooks still lure tourists with the sunken shipwreck in Piškera Cove.
Please note: this is no longer accurate — the wreck was raised from the seabed in October 2025. Don't waste your time looking for it underwater!
