The island's interior is where the native inhabitants of Šolta historically settled. Grohote, Donje Selo, Srednje Selo, and Gornje Selo are settlements situated away from the sea—and their location was no accident. For centuries, residents sought refuge here from pirate attacks, building their homes far from the coast to avoid becoming easy targets for sea marauders. Today’s raw architecture of these places is a reminder of times when safety was more important than a view of the Adriatic.

Grohote – Administrative and Commercial Hub

Grohote is the largest village on the island. While it may not offer classic attractions from a tourist perspective, it is a key logistical point for every visitor.

  • Shopping and Services: You will find a post office, a pharmacy, a medical clinic, and the island's only large supermarket for comprehensive grocery shopping.

  • The Market: A small market operates in the morning. However, it is worth noting that most of the fruits and vegetables are imported, and honey is often brought in from outside the island.

  • Local Life: This is the best place to observe the daily life of the islanders. Residents gather in the local cafes in the morning and afternoon, which serve as the hub of social life.

  • Architecture: The old part of the village is a labyrinth of narrow streets designed to be easily defended. You will find several buildings of cultural significance and many ruins of old stone houses slowly decaying, giving the town a unique, melancholic atmosphere.

WHAT TO SEE IN THE INLAND VILLAGES

Donje, Srednje, and Gornje Selo – Peace and Agriculture

These three villages lie along the main road and have retained their agricultural character, but access to services is very limited:

  • Donje Selo: The westernmost village. There are no shops or dining options here. The only road from here leads to Donja Krušica bay.

  • Srednje Selo: A small settlement dominated by silence and traditional stone architecture. Like in Donje Selo, you will find no shops or services here.

  • Gornje Selo: A place where local olive oil and wine production is highly developed, with several significant producers located here. There is a small shop and one good restaurant, but no cafes.

Logistics and Exploration

The interior of the island is a good base for those looking for cycling or hiking trails.

  • Southern Bays: If you plan an excursion to the wild bays of the southern coast (which once served as pirate hideouts), it is best to set out on trails leading from Grohote or Gornje Selo.

  • Infrastructure: Keep in mind that outside of Grohote and the single shop in Gornje Selo, opportunities for shopping or grabbing a coffee practically do not exist.

Insider Tip: A bike trip between the villages allows you to see the less commercial side of Šolta. Be sure to bring a supply of water—you won't be able to buy it in Srednje or Donje Selo, even in high season.
