DO YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE TRUE ADRIATIC ISLAND LIFESTYLE?
Then forget the crowded promenades of Brač and the noisy ports of Hvar. Although Šolta is only 9 nautical miles (18 km) from Split, it delivers the impression of CROATIA FROZEN IN TIME – the thirteenth largest island in Croatia, which has successfully hidden from the typical tourist rush for years.
This is not an island of big cities, noisy streets, or traffic lights (there are none, and why would there be?). Šolta is about SLOW LIVING, the deep greenery of PINE FORESTS and olive groves, authentic locals, and deep, relaxing peace.
The island is a municipality consisting of just nine small villages. Today, they are mainly oriented towards tourism, although the production of the BEST OLIVE OIL or DOBRIČIĆ WINE is still a respected tradition here.
The island instantly divides visitors into two groups: those who will love it forever, and those who find it too sleepy. If you are looking for loud discos, large markets, and modern tourist attractions, YOU WILL DEFINITELY NOT FIND THEM HERE.
Instead, you will find everything that is missing in the commercially overdeveloped regions of Croatia.
But I am here to tell you what happens after that first, emotional impression. The true magic of Šolta begins when:
You know what to look for and WHERE TO LEAVE THE MAIN ROAD.
You have access to USEFUL INFORMATION THAT GOOGLE, OR EVEN A PASSERBY ON A DAY TRIP, WON'T GIVE YOU.
My guide is not a report from a first visit. This is knowledge gained from years of living on the island.
The Secret of the Island Perspective: Sitting on a bench in Rogač with a view of Split, you realize that the noisy world over there absolutely does not concern you at the moment. This unique feeling, when the ferry leaves, gives unparalleled peace.
True Respite: Even during the peak tourist season, you won't find crowds off the beaten path.
Wild Beaches and Bays: The island is dotted with small, beautiful bays. Using a SUP board or a kayak, you can reach one of the uninhabited islets in 15 minutes.
Anti-Civilization Charm: You won't find any industrial plants, trucks, or traffic jams here. Instead, you will find:
No Urban Noise: It will be difficult to find a hairdresser or a beauty salon, and forget about expensive boutiques. This is an escape from consumerism and the pursuit of commerce.
Please note that Šolta does not have a full-scale hospital; in case of emergencies, there is only a local medical unit (ambulant) available.
The Influence of Pirates: In the Middle Ages, the island was the target of attacks by the famous pirates from Omiš. This isolation contributed to the creation of inland settlements and the 17th-century castle in Maslinica, which retain their original charm today.
The Beginnings: The ancient Greeks called it Olyntha, and the Romans Solenta. It was Emperor Diocletian (in 295 AD) who built his own fish farm here.
Wine: The Rebirth of Dobričić: Šolta is the native home of the rare, red grape variety Dobričić. This is small-scale winemaking, where producers (like Vićko Kaštelanac) care for every vine.
Honey: Famous Across Europe: Honey from Šolta has a historically established position! The French in the 19th century ruled that it was the best in Europe! (It is worth visiting the Tvrdić bee farm in Grohote).
Olive Oil: Zlatna Šoltanka: Local residents boast being among the best olive oil producers, and their regional brand has been winning first places in the most recognized quality rankings for years.
The largest and deepest bay. Ideal for diving and exploration. Tourist Trap 2025! Until recently, there was a shipwreck here that was a tourist attraction, but it is in vain to look for it, it was lifted from the seabed in 2025, although the internet still reports its location.
The administrative center of the island. The historical stone buildings and the absolute lack of tourists allow you to enjoy this place exclusively.
The main port. This sleepy village immediately captivates with its peace and endless nature. You will find a beautiful beach without crowds and one of the most beautiful wild bays here.
The oldest coastal settlement. A charming port that was famous for an impressive fleet of wooden sailing ships, several of which still frequently anchor in the bay.
Undeniably the most elegant village. It is famous for the most beautiful small marina in Croatia at the foot of the 17th-century Martinis Marchi castle. The view of the archipelago of seven uninhabited islets is the unique value of this place.
Šolta awaits those who desire more than a typical vacation – those who seek authenticity and a true escape from the rush.
As your local expert, I guarantee: you will find all the secrets of Šolta in this guide. And if you are looking for information and it is not here – write to me. I will be happy to help you on the spot!
